Expert Interview with Ryan Hoggan of Rocky Mountain Oils on Everyday Uses for Essential Oils

Whether you're dealing the side effects of cancer treatment, experiencing depression or suffering from achy joints, there's an essential oil that can help, says Ryan Dean Hoggan, Vice President of Rocky Mountain Oils.

"Essential oils have been used for thousands of years; you'll find 188 references to them in the Bible, recipes using them within the Egyptian hieroglyphics and a well-documented history of them in Chinese medicine," he says. "We attribute their longevity to their effectiveness."

Ryan recently checked in with us to share his insight on essential oils. Here's what he had to say:

What oils should be cupboard staples?

That really depends on what you're trying to get out of your essential oils experience. If you're interested in essential oils but don't know where to start, we refer our customers to the Single Essentials Kit so you can try a variety of oils with a variety of benefits. If you want to improve general health and wellness, the oils in our Healing Essential Kit are a perfect fit. How can essential oils be used at home day-to-day?

You can diffuse essential oils at home to clean the air, prevent against illness and make your space smell great. You can also apply essential oils topically to help with sickness, provide arthritis relief, calm your mind and aid digestion. If you're looking for a way to clean your home without traditional cleaning products that contain chemicals, try using essential oils instead.

What are your favorite types of oils for remedying common ailments (headaches, sinus problems, skin irritation, etc.)?

For everyday headaches, try Basil. If you experience more intense head pain, consider using Migraine Support.

When dealing with blocked sinuses, use Breath Ease and Deep Breathe.

Finally, relieve irritated skin with Tea Tree, Patchouli and Baby Skin.

I use our essential oils all day every day; Lymph Support is one of my favorites and one I apply every morning to help support my adrenals for increased energy. I also utilize a DIY blend of Sacred Frankincense, Myrrh and Sandalwood to help keep my skin healthy.

What are some of the most surprising or little known uses for essential oils that you've come across?

There are countless uses for essential oils. Just within the RMO Team we have a couple favorite ways to put our oil to use: peppermint oil applied topically for an afternoon pick-me-up, tea tree oil applied topically on the scalp to remove dandruff, Immune Strength diffused in the office to prevent sickness, etc. We always encourage customer feedback so we can learn how people use our products to improve their lives.

What precautions should consumers take when using essential oils? What are some no-nos?

Always use a carrier oil when applying an essential oil topically and test the mixture on a smaller area of skin before applying to the desired area. The ratio we recommend at Rocky Mountain Oils is 1-3 drops of the essential oil in ½ teaspoon of carrier oil. Using a carrier oil does not limit the effectiveness of the essential oil; instead it helps you get more out of your oil and protects your skin from irritation.

When using oils with small children, we recommend diffusing over topical application because children's skin is very sensitive.

There are certain oils that should not be used during pregnancy. At Rocky Mountain Oils we list if an essential oil is safe for pregnancy on our individual product pages.

What do we need to know about shopping for essential oils? Are all essential oils created equal?

All essential oils are not created equal. When you're shopping for oils, look for companies that conduct GC/MS tests and publish their results. These tests confirm that the oils are 100 percent pure, meaning they do not contain any adulterants, contaminants or diluents. At Rocky Mountain Oils we have a third-party lab conduct GC/MS tests on our oils twice: once when we're considering purchasing the oil from a supplier and again before we bottle the oil. Each bottle you purchase from us lists a batch number on the bottom that you can enter into our website to pull up the GC/MS result.

Why is the purity of the oil so important?

The oil's purity determines its effectiveness. When you purchase a pure oil you receive more benefits because you're using the oil how nature intended it.

What are your favorite resources for learning more about how to use essential oils?

We refer customers to our "Getting Started" page and "Just the Essentials Blog" on our website to learn more about how to use essential oils. Our blog features many recipes to help you use the oils beyond the traditional diffuse or topical-with-carrier-oil approaches. Whether you're looking for a recipe for a sweet treat, want to learn about oils that can help you achieve better sleep or need a new cleaning solution, our blog is a great resource to learn more about essential oils.
