Expert Interview Series: Neccia Celli About Natural Health and Beauty Products

Beauty products

"A good rule of thumb is, if you cannot pronounce it, don't buy it. We know now from scientific research that toxic chemicals found in our food, beauty and health personal care products actually age our skin and make us look older. This alone helps keep me on track on buying healthier products. I don't want any beauty product bad enough to cause damage to my body and age my skin."

That's sound advice from Neccia Celli of The Natural Beauty & Health Blog. We are fortunate that Neccia recently chatted with us about natural health and beauty products, as well as why they are so important for overall health.

What is your professional background?

My professional background includes writing, editing and social media.

How has it served you in your position with The Natural Beauty & Health Blog?

It's served me well, I think. I'm learning more each day as I go. Every day, I learn something new, and I love sharing things I learn with my readers.

Please tell us more about The Natural Beauty & Health Blog.

I started The Natural Beauty & Health Blog six-plus years ago after I became a mom for the second time. I began researching products for my children and realized the products I thought were natural were far from it. Once I started taking the time to read the labels, I realized there is a big problem with false advertising about natural-based products, companies not listing all the ingredients on their label,s and so on. I was on a mission to bring awareness to this issue and recommend better, more natural-based and non-toxic products I was using in my own family's routine.

I cover a variety of topics such as non-toxic beauty and health personal care items as well as natural-based related news. You will find natural beauty and health product reviews, advice, recommendations, healthy recipes, healthy supplements, giveaways and more!

How do you choose which beauty products to include in a blog post?

I usually choose a product I'm personally using or reviewing for a
natural-based company. Some are product request reviews, and others are just products I personally try out, use, and love.

Do you personally have any favorite beauty products?

I love and use several muli-tasking natural-based and non-toxic products like Egyptian Magic skin cream for when I have breakouts, bites, and burns. It also gives your skin a gorgeous glow! I also love Josie Maran's Organic Argan oil on my face, body, and hair, as well as her cosmetic line that's non-toxic and natural. It's based on organic argan oil, which makes your skin dewy and gives you a glow as well.

A few times per week when my face needs a little something more, I use pure, unrefined shea butter as a facial moisturizer. Its thick texture literally plumps all my fine lines. At 37 years old, I still don't have any wrinkles and no one believes my age. I hope that continues. Pure shea butter minimizes fine lines and wrinkles and also firms and brightens skin. It's always been my go-to product for just about any skin condition, and I highly recommend it.

A little goes a long way with these products. If you use too much, they can break you out. I just use a dab and rotate them because they all have different textures and give different results. But they are all fabulous, and any one of the three would be great because you can use them all on your face, body and hair. Also, the price is worth it when you can use them on the entire family!

How would you define a natural beauty product?

A natural beauty product to me has only a few ingredients I can pronounce and is low in toxicity.

Why do you think it's so important for beauty products to be natural?

It's important to me because most of the products we see today in our local drugstore, department store, or beauty store are full of toxic chemicals and may say "natural" but sometimes aren't. For example, just the word "fragrance" in a product can have up to 200+ toxic chemicals, and that's just one word on the ingredients list! Our skin is our largest organ, and everything you put on it is absorbed into your bloodstream. Toxins are then stored in your fatty tissues and never processed out.

So be careful what you use. As toxins are stored in the body, they can build up too much over time, and that's when we develop chronic diseases. Too many toxins in the body cause inflammation which can age skin, cause acne breakouts, make you gain weight, and lead to cancer and a myriad of other diseases.

If someone is just starting to transform their beauty products to natural items, how should they get started?

The best way to get started is by researching the products you want to buy before you buy them or taking a minute or two to read product labels. You will probably notice a pattern of ingredients you cannot pronounce and won't recognize, and will hopefully look for healthier, non-toxic beauty products instead.

Please share with us anything that you think has contributed to the success of The Natural Beauty & Health Blog.

I think any success I've had with the blog comes from my willingness to never give up and continue researching and writing about these topics for the last six years. Also, not listening to others who are negative and discouraging has been big for me. If you have a dream, keep persevering and don't give up! At the end of the day, they're not living your life; you are. So live it the way YOU want to.

What are some of the things that you have learned along the way?

I've actually learned a lot along my journey. I've learned to take
more time to read labels and search for products I want to try beforehand. I also research the company and ensure they are sustainable and back up what they say. I've also learned there are very few companies that actually do what they say they'll do. When you find a company and product you stand by, stick with it. You can always try new products out, but I usually stick to the same products once I find something that works for me.
